Digvijay Singh slams BJP government for suggesting ban on religious conversions

New Delhi: As the Narendra Modi government faced the Opposition’s heat over the conversion issue, parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday suggested an anti-conversion law in the country.

However, Congress leader Digvijay Singh slammed the government for suggesting that a legislation to ban religious conversions can be brought in if all parties agree, saying it was an infringement of fundamental rights. The Opposition demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

In the Lok Sabha, the government faced the Opposition’s heat as it was charged with “vitiating the atmosphere in the country for political gains.” The Opposition, which later staged a walkout, alleged that people were being converted on inducement of ration cards and houses.

Meanwhile, the Union home ministry has asked the UP government to file a report on this week’s “forced conversions” in Agra.
