All set for Biennale opening today

The event to be formally inaugurated by Mr Oommen Chandy

Kochi: The second edition of Kochi-Muziris Biennale, which is opening on Friday, beckons the people to a voyage of discovery through works of art for over a 3-month period.

The eight venues displaying paintings, sculptors and installations were abuzz with last-minute preparations for the show on Thursday.

The fulcrum of the activity is mainly in Fort Kochi, which hosts seven of the eight exhibition venues for the event, billed as one of the largest displays of contemporary art in the country.

The second edition of biennale will see 94 artists from 30 countries displaying their creative oeuvre in the form of paintings, installations and sculptures in the next 104 days.

The visitors “will journey through artistic forms as varied as the minimalist poem, sculptural installations, drawing, painting, video and performance,” Jitsh Kallat, the curator of the event, said in his note.

Although the Kochi Biennale Foundation, the organisers of the event, was all set to inaugurate it on Friday, most of the artists were still engaged in completing the displays.

In the Aspinwall House, the main venue, artists were seen racing against time to make the finishing touches.

Anish Kapoor, Gulam Mohammad Sheikh, Madhusudhanan, Sudhir Patwardahn, Aji V.N. and Mithu Sen are some of the top Indian artists attending the event.

A slew of artists from US, UK, Germany, Australia and France are also attending it, according to the Kochi-Biennale Foundation. The works of senior Indian artist K.G. Subramanyan, Namboodiri, Pushpamala and several others will also be on display.

The event to be formally inaugurated by Mr Oommen Chandy will be interspersed with seminars, film screenings and other cultural events in the coming days.
