Andhra Pradesh: Cyclone Hudhud survivor dies in blast

Cylinder explosion in Vizag leaves 1 dead, 15 hurt

Visakhapatnam: Leakage from an LPG cylinder led to an explosion in a house on Rangireeju Street, under One-Town police station limits, at around 7.30 am on Tuesday. It resulted in the death of a two-month-old baby girl and left 15 people, including children, injured.

Parents of the two-month-old infant had faced every ordeal and ensured that she was safely born in King George Hospital when Cyclone Hudhud made landfall in Visakhapatnam on October 12 this year.

However, the two-month- old baby passed away even before her parents could name her. Her parents had planned on naming her Varshita.

The grief stricken parents of the infant, Vaddadi Devi Prasad Kumar and Vaddadi Bhavani, said that they had kept an eye on their daughter when someone had said that there was a gas leakage in a house.

But, within seconds of the alert, the LPG cylinder exploded in K. Satyanarayana’s house and a piece of asbestos fell on the infant’s face who was sleeping in the house next door. Mr Devi Kumar, an autorickshaw driver, said that the infant was their second daughter.

They wanted to name her Varshita as she was born on the day of heavy winds and rain on October 12. Speaking to this correspondent, Bhavani, the infant’s mother, said that she had prayed for the birth of her daughter the day Hudhud made landfall. The police has registered a case and conducted an inquest in the presence of the parents of the infant.

According to the police the accident took place when the inmates of Mr Satyanarayana’s house were trying to fix an LPG cylinder that had reportedly been leaking for two days.

While Suribabu, a neighbour was installing the cylinder’s regulator the gas gushed out, caused a spark in an electrical fitting which led to an explosion in the kitchen
