Congress stakes claim for Opposition Leader's post in Maharashtra

Post is vacant after Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde's resignation

Mumbai: With the post of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Assembly falling vacant after Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde's resignation, Congress on Friday staked claim on the post.

"Congress today formally staked its claim on the post, through a letter submitted to the Speaker," state legislature Principal Secretary Anant Kalse said.

Weeks after squabbling over allocation of portfolios, the Shiv Sena today finally joined the BJP-led government when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expanded his cabinet.

Eknath Shinde, who was sworn in as a cabinet minister, earlier today submitted his resignation letter to the Principal Secretary of Vidhan Bhavan Anant Kalse. He was occupying the post since November 10.

NCP, which has 41 MLAs, has announced it will stake claim to the Opposition Leader's post. However, the Speaker has not received its claim so far, Kalse said.
