United States consulate office for Vijayawada

A substantial number of people fly to US from Vijayawada
Hyderabad: The US is likely to set up a branch office of its Consulate in Vijayawada. The issue came up for discussion when a delegation from the US met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister requested them to set up a US Consulate in Vijayawada, stating that a substantial number of people fly to the US from Vijayawada and its surrounding regions.
“Most of the people, flying to the US from the state, hail from this region. Hence, it would be beneficial, if you set up an office there,” Mr Naidu told the members of the delegation.
Mr Naidu’s office quoted the US officials as saying that they would consider the possibility of setting up a branch office in Vijayawada.
The delegation comprised assistant secretary of state for the bureau of political-military affairs Puneet Talwar, deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia Atul Keshap, deputy assistant secretary of state for the bureau of political-military affairs Kenneth B. Handelman and Consul-General Michael Mullins among others.
The US delegation also evinced interest in investing in India’s defence technologies. Mr Naidu welcomed them to invest in Visakhapatnam, which is home to Eastern Naval Command. “We want to focus on automobiles, electronics, agro-processing and petrochemicals,” he added.
