KSEB imposes Rs 10 lakh fine for power theft

Electricity tariff was not changed from domestic to commercial

KOCHI: The Anti Power Theft squad of the Kerala State Electricity Board on Monday unearthed power theft estimated to be around Rs 21 lakh during surprise raids conducted at various parts of the district.

The squad slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh from the owner of an apartment complex at Girinagar. The apartment complex has 15 flats which were earlier rented out to individuals.

“However, last year, the apartment complex was refurnished and leased out to a petroleum company as its Guest House charging Rs two lakh per month.

However, electricity tariff was not changed from ‘domestic’ to ‘commercial’. He so far enjoyed paying lesser amount as power charges and the loss is estimated to be around Rs 15 lakh,” said an officer.
