Buses to be soon fitted with GPRS to cut mishaps

The licence will be issued only to persons who have attended the class

KOCHI: Buses facing the charge of causing the most number of accidents in the district will be fitted with GPRS.

A meeting of the district safety council held on Saturday has decided to implement the project on an experimental basis in 50 buses in the district.

The selection of the buses will be made on the basis of the reports to be submitted by the regional transport office.

The decision was taken in the background of widespread complaints over the increasing number of accidents caused by private buses on account of speeding and racing, a release issued after the meeting said.

The meeting also decided to make a one-day orientation class on trauma care and first aid mandatory for all those applying for a heavy vehicle driving licence in view of the high rate of accidents. The licence will be issued only to persons who have attended the class.

The meeting also decided to conduct a joint inspection by police and RTO officials of the illegal advertisement hoardings in the city. The cost for removing the hoardings will be extracted from persons who have installed them in case they fail to remove the hoardings.

The meeting also asked the Public Works Department to submit a detailed report on the measures to be undertaken for implementing the recommendations of the Chandrasekhara Das Commission to bring down the accident rates in the district.
