Calcutta High Court allows BJP President Amit Shah to hold rally in Kolkata

BJP’s request of holding a rally was repeatedly rejected by several city agencies

Kolkata: In another setback to the West Bengal government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday gave the BJP permission to hold a rally in the heart of the city on Sunday, where its president Amit Shah will be the main speaker.

Justice Debangshu Basak gave permission with a rider, naming two special officers to ensure the BJP complies with all rules. State BJP chief Rahul Sinha welcomed the order.

A state government plans to challenge this before a division bench on Saturday. The fire services director general and Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s joint commissioner were named special officers, and the police commissioner has been told to depute an officer to assist them.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the fire department had Thursday rejected the BJP’s application to hold the rally outside Victoria House, the headquarters of CESC.
