Bar Council told to defer meet

Order pending on appeal filed by BCI
Hyderabad: A division bench comprising CJ Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the Hyderabad HC on Friday directed the Bar Council of AP to defer its general body meeting scheduled to be held on Saturday till the pronouncement of the order on the appeal filed by the Bar Council of India.
The bench was hearing an appeal by the BCI challenging a single judge order directing it to take immediate steps to ensure that a Bar Council for Telangana becomes operational.
The counsel representing the respondents brought to the notice of the bench that the existing AP Bar Council had proposed to hold a meeting of its general body on Saturday and urged it to stay the meeting till the final disposal of the appeal.
They said that as per the AP Reorganisa-tion Act a separate Bar Council for Telangana has to be constituted once an appointed day was fixed for the state. D. Prakash Reddy, appearing for the BCI, urged the court to grant an interim order to stay the single judge order as the BCI has no powers to constitute a Bar Council for Telangana. The bench said they are reserving orders regarding the interim application and adjourned hearing to next week.
