We allowed it to happen, says Lalit Modi

Former IPL commissioner said it was a mistake to allow Srinivasan buy an IPL team

Chennai: Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said on Thursday that it was a mistake by the Board members including himself to allow N. Srinivasan buy an IPL team. “Yes, we allowed it to happen. And wrongfully so. And I have been trying to correct it over the last five years,” Modi told a news channel.

“The minute we realised conflict of interest was becoming an issue, we tried to do away with it in 2009. We had back-dated those documents in 2008 to before the AGM. We did not expect that this would become such an issue. We thought, we would look into all the future problems and correct them going forward. When I started to voice these issues, they removed me,” Modi added.

Modi also accused state association of siphoning of money. “BCCI gives subsidies of 60 to 70 crores to state associations. That is the problem. I have asked the Income Tax authorities to look at how this money is being spent. Most of them are just into siphoning of money,” Modi said.

Modi also said his dedicated perseverance has seen the case reach so far. “If I had been in India my hands would have been probably tied and I would not have been able to expose mafia owner of CSK and India Cement’s modus operandi. Today cleared by all agencies including winning my passport back, still not been able to get false FIR registered in Chennai heard or removed. So much is the clout of the India Cements mafia boss over the police in his state and on everything else around him.”
