New South Wales alters rules to pay tribute to Phil Hughes

Deceased cricketer’s club extends retirement conventions, enables kids to retire on 63 not out

Sydney: Cricket New South Wales is all set to pay a very special tribute to Phil Hughes, who died from a head injury on Thursday after a bouncer knocked him out during the Sheffield Shield game on Tuesday in Sydney.

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Andrew Jones on Friday said, “Phillip passed away playing a game he loved and this tragedy has affected the entire cricket community.”

He added, “Cricketers will want to pay their respects to Phillip in different ways, whether it is a minute silence prior to a match, wearing black armbands or just gathering with team mates to reflect.

“We ask that players of all ages take a moment this weekend, whether it is on the field or off it, to remember Phillip and celebrate his life."

Cricket New South Wales has come up with special suggestions which the clubs can incorporate as part of their tribute to Phil Hughes during the games this weekend.

  • Extending Junior retirement rules to enable kids to retire on 63 not out instead of 50 not out (Hughes was unbeaten on 63 when he got retired hurt)
  • Reducing Two Day games to 63 overs per side rather than 70 overs
  • Getting creative with writing Hughes’ player number, 408, on the outfield
  • Wearing a black arm band
  • Observing a moment’s silence after the toss
  • Bringing both teams together after the match to spend some extra time together.
