Dead teen’s kin to get Rs 10 lakhs ex gratia

The Army had immediately taken responsibility for the deaths

Srinagar: The Army’s 53 Rashtriya Rifles claimed it had fired at the car when it didn’t stop despite being signalled at two checkpoints and even tried to break through the third barrier.

The families of the boys and eyewitnesses, however, alleged that the firing started without warning or provocation.

The Army had immediately taken responsibility for the deaths, saying, “We sincerely wish the killing of civilians hadn’t happened. We share the sorrow of the families.”

Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda, GOC-in-C Northern Com-mand, also said: “There was some information about a white car with terrorists. Obviously the identity was mistaken in this case. We take responsibility.” He also said the MoD would give Rs 10 lakhs to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakhs to the injured.

Police investigations had negated the Army claims, and said the car skidded while overtaking another vehicle and hit an electric pole. The Army court of inquiry has in less four weeks reportedly indicted nine soldiers for the killing, thereby sending a strong political message at a time when Assembly polls are being held in five phases.

A spokesperson of Army’s Northern Command said, “The inquiry has been completed and the report has been submitted.” He added that the same was being examined by the legal department for further procedure as warranted under law.
