Civic body nod to make Libra hotel exclusive for women

The ruling bench approved the project through voting

Kochi: The City Corporation council on Thursday approved the proposal to convert its Libra hotel at Paramara Road to a women-only hotel, amidst a strong protest by opposition members.

At the special session of the council convened to discuss the projects selected for the Mission Kochi 15-08-15 programme of the civic body, the CPM councillors objected to the proposal to take up the hotel project in the public private partnership mode.

Official of the government approved firm M/s Virgo Aqua, which prepared the design and cost details of the project, made a presentation before the councillors.

While discussing the proposal, the opposition members strongly criticised the Mayor for assigning the firm with detailed project report preparation, without consulting the council members.

The proposal is to convert Libra, into a state of the art women-exclusive hotel at a cost of Rs 7.45 cr. Though opposition councillors including Adv. Anil Kumar, Adv. N.A Shafeeq, C.A Shakeer, Mumtaz techer and M.P Mahesh Kumar strongly objected to the PPP proposal, the ruling bench approved the project through voting.
