Amicus Curiae devoid of court powers: Supreme Court

The court maintained that the royal family did not have any birth right on the temple

Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that the amicus curiae appointed for the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple case was not entitled to the powers of the court.

The bench also maintained that the Travancore royal family did not have any birth right over the temple.

Considering the case, a bench comprising Justice T.S.Thakur and Justice Anil R. Dave said that the amicus curiae only needed to report to the court on the state of affairs at the temple. He was not empowered to issue any orders or directions.

The court remarks came while considering a set of about 129 suggestions mooted by the amicus curiae for the temple.

While the royal family raised certain objections to some suggestions, the court maintained that the royal family did not have any birth right on the temple, but could only give suggestions for the temple’s welfare.

The temple administration was directed to allot enough funds required for protecting the temple wealth as well as to ensure the welfare of the temple priests.
