Elderly women killed in fire triggered by gas leak

Tenants living in adjacent portion also succumbed to burns
Chennai: Two elderly women, aged 80 and 70, died and a 70-year-old man is in a critical condition after a fire was triggered by an LPG gas leak in a house at Jamalia in Perambur on Tuesday night. While the landlady, M. Kirubaiammal (80), who was alone at home when the LPG leak took place and died a few hours after the incident, her tenants, living in the adjacent portion, a couple, Hermant Rosario and Juliet Rosario, aged 70, were taken to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
Juliet succumbed to her burns on Wednesday evening around 3 pm, the hospital authorities said. Hermant Rosario, a musician, who performs at star hotels in the city, was moved to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital to be treated for his head injuries and is said to be in a critical condition.Investigations revealed that Herment who returned home after work around midnight got the smell of gas and informed his wife after which they went to alert the landlady.
Kirubaiammal had switched on the light when they knocked on the door, which triggered the blaze, the police said. The lady had slept after keeping the water on the gas for boiling. While the water spilled over the stove and extinguished the flame, the gas was still on and when she switched the light on, it triggered a blaze, an investigating official said.
While the two women suffered burn injuries, the front door got blasted in the blaze and hit Herment who suffered severe head injuries. Locals who woke up to the loud sound immediately alerted the police and called the ambulance.Kirubaiammal was staying alone on the ground floor and had rented out portions in the two-storeyed house as all her sons were settled abroad. The Rosarios were living there for the past 14 years and their daughter lives in Australia, according to S.Vijayakumar, a painting contractor and another tenant in the house.
