Telangana University Vice Chancellors to be nominated

Seven state universities in Telangana are currently without regular V-Cs

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is looking to nominate persons for appointment as Vice-Chancellors of state universities, instead of inviting candidates through public notification.

As reported earlier, seven state universities in Telangana are currently without regular V-Cs. A search committee is being formed to name a panel of three competent persons, one among whom is to be selected by the state government as the Vice-Chancellor of each of the universities.

According to the UGC regulations, the selection of Vice-Chancellor should be through proper identification of a panel of three to five names by a search committee through a public notification or nomination or talent search process or in combination.

The V-C should also have a minimum of 10 years of experience as professor in a university or an equal position in a reputed research organisation.

But the government is looking to use the nomination process under which the search committee will nominate three persons, one among whom will be appointed by the governor as the V-C.

“It is not mandatory that a public notification be given to select the panel of three persons,” sources said.

The state government had earlier sought to know if this would be in violation of regulations. However, the practice in the recent past has been to issue a public notification inviting applications from qualified persons to apply for the post of Vice-Chancellor.
