Kochi gets two hi tech fish markets

The Thevara market, built at a cost of Rs 1.30cr, will be inaugurated next week

KOCHI: Even as public protest is mounting over the functioning of the unhygienic fish and meat markets in the city, two modern fish markets have been set up in the west Kochi area, at Palluruthy and Thevara.

The double-storeyed building constructed on corporation land in Palluruthy at a cost of Rs 2.30 cr, has an office, a rest room, a cold storage facility, a flake ice unit and a waste water treatment plant. The Thevara market, built at a cost of Rs 1.30cr, will be inaugurated next week.

The markets initiated by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC), built at a total cost of nearly Rs 4cr, has modern amenities including a waste treatment plant.

Minister for Fisheries and Port K. Babu inaugurated the Palluruthy market on Saturday. Dominic Presentation MLA, Mayor Tony Chammany, deputy mayor B. Bhadra and standing committee chairpersons were also present.

The project, with the objective of modernizing fish marketing and to ensure health and hygiene of fishermen and vendors, is being undertaken with the financial support of the National Fisheries Development Board.

In Ernakulam district, the Corporation has undertaken projects worth Rs 86.18 cr including the eight modern fish markets at Palluruthy, Thevara, North Paravur, Aluva, Kalady, Udayamperoor, Mulanthuruthy and Muvattupuzha.
