Surveillance system at airports, seaports to continue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 117 persons who arrived at the three international airports and five seaports from Ebola hit countries are currently under observation in the state.

State Nodal Officer for Ebola Screening Dr Amar Fettel told DC that of the 680 passengers who arrived from Sierra Lone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria since August, 563 had already been cleared as "non infected" after 30 days mandatory observation period.

The three international airports and five sea ports Kochi, Vizhinjam, Vaady Kollam, Beypore and Azhikal are under surveillance.

Health authorities said the surveillance system put in place at airports and at the district and local level would continue to function for the moment.

At present all people arriving from the four countries were being screened at the airports and seaports and those with visible symptoms were followed up.

The details are being conveyed to health authorities at the district level on an hourly basis. These officials call up people under surveillance at least twice a day to enquire about their health.

In the event of any symptoms, they have been advised to inform the nearest health authorities for immediate intervention. The entire surveillance mechanism is functioning under the District Surveillance Officers .

Meanwhile, doctors from the state are being trained in batches to deal with the infection, quarantine measures and treatment protocol being followed internationally.
