Karnataka goverment does U-turn on professor’s appointment
Prof. Ashok Kumar, accused in marks card scandal, was tipped to join music varsity as special officer
Bengaluru: The state government has decided against appointing former registrar of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) , professor Ashok Kumar, who is battling charges of involvement in a marks cards scandal , as Special Officer of the Gangubai Hangal Music University in Mysore .Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, higher education and tourism minister, R.V. Deshpande said the higher education department had closed the file on the professor, who is being investigated by the CID for his role in the RGUHS marks card scam.
Prof. Kumar reported to duty in the Electronic Media department of Bengaluru University on November 17 after his suspension was revoked, and reports of his being appointed Special Officer of the Gangubai Hangal Music University, have since surfaced. But asserting that the government would not appoint any "tainted " officer to the post, Mr Deshpande said, “ his file has been closed by the department.”
Sources in the higher education department, however, said the government had decided to keep the order appointing him to the university in abeyance following media reports protesting the move.
Meanwhile, after a hiatus of five years, the higher education department has decided to recruit 2200 lecturers for degree colleges across the state. As many as 1298 lecturers will be appointed through CET.
Also, there are plans to start smart classrooms , where students will get to hear lectures of experts via video, in government first grade colleges across the state, according to the minister. To begin with, they will be established in 50 government colleges and extended to others in a phased manner. E- content would also be distributed to all government first grade colleges, the minister revealed.
