Jubilee Hills flyover to cost Rs 16.2 crore

Toli Chowki flyover to be completed before Sankranti, says GHMC chief

Hyderabad: The work on the four lane 359 metre Jubilee Hills flyover will commence from December.

The less than half a kilometre grade separator, starting from Jubilee Hills check post and heading towards Road No. 36 in Jubilee Hills (towards Hitec City), is to be built on a budget of Rs 16.2 crores.

Jubilee Hills check post witnesses more than 10,000 vehicles per hour, as per the survey conducted by the Hyderabad Traffic department.

The GHMC’s Standing Committee has approved the 359 metre width of the flyover with 17.5-metre separator, and post the general body meeting, the project will be submitted to the government for approval.

“The Toli Chowki flyover is to be completed before Sankranti,” said GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar Hyderabad Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain said, “The Hyderabad Traffic department, following a survey, has recommended a flyover as the four arm junction has reached its saturation point.

The project will be taken up in co ordination with the Hyderabad Metro Rail, after administrative approval. The construction will take 8 10 months.

The approved proposals will be tabled in the next general body meeting of the Corporation. Once government orders are issued, the Corporation will invite tenders for the construction.

The GHMC will share the expenditure with head of accounts under the ‘Conservation and improvement of flyovers for 2014-15.’

The project’s feasibility report has been forwarded to the HMR and L&T officials for scrutiny.

The alignment of the Metro will be changed to accommodate the proposed flyover, said the officials. While experts say that flyovers ease traffic by 40-50 per cent, Avinash Mohanti, DCP Traffic, Cyberabad said, “At many major signals, 50-60 per cent of the commuters have nothing to do with the junction, they just have to cross over.

There are lesser commuters who need to take a right or left. But once the commuters exit the separator, the traffic again is crippling.

The owning agency should ensure that the road ahead is able to accommodate the vehicles. The flyover’s width should be able to withstand the flow; for instance the Airport, Paradise and the Patny separators are narrow.

Even if an auto breaks downs the entire flyover is jammed. The width should be able to hold the present traffic flow.”
