KGS Aranmula plea rejected

The company had not taken any measures legally tenable for the protection of the environment

KOCHI: The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition filed by the KGS Group, promoters of the proposed airport project at Aranmula, against the verdict of the Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal quashing the permission granted by the Ministry of Forests and Environment for the project.

The bench chaired by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu also upheld the NGT verdict that the company should not undertake any construction activity in connection with the airport project.

The NGT had quashed the permission given by the MoEF on the ground that Enviro Care India Private Ltd, the agency appointed by the KGS Group to undertake an environment impact assessment, did not have the required qualification.

The NGT verdict also mentioned that the company had not taken any measures legally tenable for the protection of the environment.

The Supreme Court, while dismissing the writ petition on Friday, upheld most of the points in the NGT verdict.
