Man met with accident while riding on his two-wheeler
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore police provided a green corridor for swiftly transporting in less than 10 minutes the vital organs of a Central government employee, who was declared brain dead after an accident, from K.G. Hospital to two private hospitals at Peelamedu.
P. Balasubramanian was barely 38 years old when he met with an accident while riding his two-wheeler to his brother’s house at Vadavalli on November 16. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital by the bystanders. After initial treatment, he was brought to K.G. Hospital for treatment.
Dr M. Natarajan, chief neurosurgeon, performed a marathon surgery on the left side of the brain and on the next day, a second brain injury on the same side of the brain was performed. As the surgery did not yield any result, he was declared brain dead.
The patients’ relatives were informed of the brain death on November 18. The cadaver transplant coordinator of K.G. Hospital, Mr C.B. Chandrasekaran, discussed options of organ donation with the relatives who gave an approving nod.
Accordingly, the liver and one of the two kidneys was rushed to P.S.G. Hospital and the eyes were donated to a patient at Aravind Hospital at Peelamdedu. One kidney was donated to a patient at K.G. Hospital.
People increasingly are volunteering to donate their organs of their relatives nowadays, said K.G. Hospital’s chairman, Dr G. Baktavatsalam. The Coimbatore city traffic police also played a vital role in providing speedy and safe passage for the ambulances carrying these organs to the hospitals.
