Australia clinch third ODI to take 2-1 lead, Aaron Finch scores ton

South Africa fail to chase 330 despite good knock by Amla, de Villiers

Canberra: Australia beat South Africa in the third one-day international by 73 runs here on Wednesday. Despite a brilliant knock by Hashim Amla (102), the Proteas could not cross the line and are now 2-1 down in the series.

Later in the innings, captain AB de Villiers stepped up with an agenda but his quick 52 off 34 did not come handy too. South Africa kept losing wickets on the other end.

Mitchell Starc picked up four wickets, including that of the dangerous David Miller who could have made a difference in the run chase.

Earlier, Australian opener Aaron Finch cracked 109 off 127 balls as Australia amassed a formidable 329 for five off their 50 overs in the third one-day international against South Africa here on Wednesday.

Finch was in blistering form as the Australians made full use of Canberra's slow Manuka Oval pitch after winning the toss. He hit nine fours and three sixes to spearhead the Australian run plunder before he was dismissed by part-time bowler AB de Villiers in the 41st over.

Fellow opener David Warner pounded 53 off 50 balls with six fours and two sixes in a first-wicket stand of 118 in 20 overs. Warner looked set for a big score before he found Proteas skipper De Villiers, who took a leaping catch at mid-wicket.

Steve Smith hammered an unbeaten 73 from 55 balls in an innings full of shot improvisation, including one boundary hit through his legs. Smith crashed eight fours in a majestic knock, while Shane Watson took a more controlled 40 off 38 balls before he miscued and was caught in the deep by David Miller off the medium pacers of Farhaan Behardien.

Skipper George Bailey came and went for 12 and Mitchell Marsh smacked 22 off 13 balls. Morne Morkel was the best of the Proteas bowlers with two for 84, while Vernon Philander, de Villiers and Behardien all took a wicket each.

Brief scores: Australia 329/5 in 50 overs (A Finch 109, S Smith 73; M Morkel 2/84) beat South Africa 256 (H Amla 102, A de Villiers 52, Q de Kock 47; M Starc 4/32) by 73 runs
