Chennai: The city police on Tuesday held a meeting with representatives of private schools in the city and suggested that they ask the vehicles used to transport children to install GPS.
Additional commissioner (Traffic), P. Thamaraikannan, chaired a meeting with representatives from school management, where various issues on safety of school children were discussed, police said.
“The GPS tracking system has become cheap and enables the school managements to view the routes, taken by drivers, on any given day or even real time,” said a senior police officer.
Cops also advised the school managements to get the antecedent check of the non-teaching staff like van drivers done before employing them.
Adding to their previous suggestion, police told the schools to speed up the process of installing CCTV cameras in school entrances and parking lots of the campus.
According to an official statement, “The police inspectors will also be willing to visit the schools and give suggestions on how to improve the safety aspects in the school.”
A senior official told that schools were asked to implement the suggestions by December this year.
