Dharmapuri: Four more newborns, three of them girls, died at the Dharmapuri Government hospital within 12 hours on Monday, taking the death toll of infants at the neonatal unit of the hospital to 10 in just four days.
Even as hospital authorities claimed that the medical care at the neo-natal unit had been stepped up, four more babies lay lifelesss on Monday.
“All the four kids were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital in a critical condition. We gave the infants the best care available. But they did not respond to the treatment and succumbed,” Dr M. Elangovan, Dean in-charge of the hospital said. The infants were between 2 to 25 days old and all the mothers were in their early 20s, frail and severely malnourished, claimed doctors.
