CAT opens up IIM Visakhapatnam for students

Unlike last year, CAT is being held only on two days
Hyderabad: Thousands of aspirants to Indian Institutes of Management took the Common Admission Test in the first slot in about 10 centres in the city on Sunday.
Difficulty level of the vastly trimmed down CAT was perceived to be at par with that in previous years though difficulty levels in individual sections varied. IIM Visakhapatnam will also be available for registrations with courses likely to commence from the ensuing academic year.
Unlike last year, CAT is being held only on two days but is longer in both duration and number of questions that can be attempted. Earlier tests were held for nearly 20 days in about 40 slots and were shorter in length with just 60 questions in two sections spanning two hours and 20 minutes. This year, however, only four slots on two days have been provided but the paper will have 100 questions in the same two sections spanning nearly three hours.
No technical glitches were reported in the online examination though students in some centres said they weren’t too happy with the quality of infrastructure. The overall difficulty of the examination this year is said to be at par with previous years.
Mr Ramnath Kankadandi, Course Director, TIME, said individual sections varied in difficulty levels. “In section-I, the area of Quantitative Ability was perceived to be relatively simpler, when compared to the high level of concepts and difficulty level seen earlier.
However, the opposite could be said about the area of Data Interpretation, where relatively difficult sets had appeared, when compared to the moderate level of difficulty seen earlier.” He added, “In section-II, the VA and RC parts were rated to be of roughly the same level as that in the last few years, but the LR part was perceived to be very difficult.”
The second slot of the CAT will be held this Saturday. The convener of the examination has also announced registration options for new IIMs, including the one proposed in Visakhapatnam, to be opened this year.
