Sterilisation case: Raman feels heat

Rahul Gandhi visited Bilaspur to meet the victims

New Delhi: Pressure is mounting on the BJP central leadership for a change of guard in Chhattisgarh following the botched up sterilisation drive which had killed more than 10 women and left more than 100 ill.

Some feel if the party high commands takes the step to remove Raman Singh from the post of Chhattisgarh chief minister, he could be shifted to Delhi in the organisation.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who visited Bilaspur to meet the victims on Saturday, accused the Raman Singh government of trying to “cover-up” and said corruption has a “role” in the tragedy.

The state government has constituted a probe panel under a retired judge to investigate the botched surgeries and is also awaiting chemical analysis report of the pills given to the victims after reports of traces of rodenticides in them.

Before embarking on the three nation tour earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called Mr Raman Singh and had asked him to ensure thorough investigation and action in the entire issue.

Mr Modi had also asked Union health minister J P Nadda to ensure all required assistance to the state government. A section within the BJP’s state unit is also miffed with the CM for failing to fix any accountability on the health minister Amar Aggarwal, who is considered close to him.
