Coimbatore: If there was a contest on the most dug-up road in Coimbatore city, the Avarampalayam main road in Peelamedu will emerge the clear winner. However, as of now, residents are the clear losers as the Avarampalayam main road has been dug up at least 10 times over the last one year.
The reasons for digging up the road are aplenty. From laying underground drains to repairing broken pipelines and laying sewag lines, the civic body has found innumerable, disparate reasons to dig up the Avarampalayam roads over and over again.
An earethmover has been stationed permanently as work is on for 365 days. The roads have been dug up and mud heaped on either sides of the road, inconveniencing motorists to a great extent.
The same is the case with Illango Nagar and Shoba Nagar where the roads have been fully dug up for UGD work. The residents are even unable to get their vehicles into their houses.
“We are neither able to get the vehicle inside the house nor park it out on the road. Life has been all the more miserable following the torrential rains. Those walking or riding get caught in the sludge,” said Mr S. Pughazendi, the owner of a studio in the area.
R. Gayathri, a class 8 student of a school in the area, said it is really nighmarish to wade through these roads during school hours as traffic snarls are intense. The vehicles move inch-by-inch and it takes 20 minutes to get to the school that is just 2 minutes from home, she lamented.
As there are three schools in and around the area, the student community suffers a lot. Nancy, another student of the area, said school buses never halt at the designated stops as the roads have become extremely narrow because they have been dug up.
When DC contacted councillor R. Mahilla of ward 40 over phone on the issue, her husband, who answered the call, said the councillor was at home but the reporter should talk to him. “I am the chinna councillor of the ward,” he declared. And then hung up.
