Bargate scandal: VS Achuthanandan questions PB stand on KM Mani

Demands reason for dodging CBI probe
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan has shot off a letter to CPM general secretary Prakash Karat questioning the central leadership’s decision not to seek a CBI probe into the bribe allegations against Finance Minister K.M. Mani.
He sought to know from the central leadership on what basis did it decide that there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the serious bribe charges. Did the party take a similar position of not demanding a CBI probe into any other cases? he asked the central leadership.
Mr Achuthanandan said the party had forcefully demanded a CBI probe into the solar scam and ice cream parlour sex racket case. “I am not able to understand the logic behind the leadership decision against a CBI inquiry into the Mani case,” he said and added that the anti-CBI stand would create an impression that the CPM was adopting a “soft” approach towards Mr Mani.
Mr Achuthanandan was the first to demand a CBI probe but the central leadership had rejected the view mainly at the behest of the state unit which favoured a court-monitored probe by the SIT of the state police.
However, many in the LDF are not convinced about the demand for a court-monitored investigation as they believe that the state police would not be able to conduct an independent probe against a powerful minister like Mr Mani.
