Furniture goes up in flames at godown

Rs 10 lakh worth of goods damaged in fire
Coimbatore: A private furniture godown went up in flames in Jagadeesh Nagar in Seeranaickenpalayam near Vadavalli on Thursday evening. Fire officials expect at least Rs 10 lakh worth of goods to be damaged in the mishap. However no one was injured and fire officials are yet to ascertain the reason for the mishap, said fire officials. Police said that Reeky, the owner of the furniture godown owns a retail showroom in R.S. Puram.
He had stocked furniture in the godown of 4500 square feet space covered by an asbestos sheet on top of the godown in Karupathal layout in Seeranaickenpalayam near Vadavalli. About 20 labourers were also working in the unit and making furniture like sofas, dining tables, dressing tables and other types of furniture.
At around 6.15 pm on Thursday evening when the labourers went outside to drink tea, the godown went up in flames. Workers noticed the flames engulfing the furniture and other wooden articles. The fire services arrived within minutes. It took more than five hours, about 40 fire fighters and four fire service and rescue vehicles to put out the raging fire. Hundreds of residents gathered at the spot.
The damage and loss caused by the fire is yet to be ascertained, but a preliminary assessment revealed that the entire furniture worth several lakh rupees was damaged.
Meanwhile, police are probing the fire mishap. They claim that a heavy load may have tumbled onto the electrical devices and triggered the fire. The actual cause of the mishap is yet to be known, said police.
