Chennai Port Trust tender for windmill farm soon

Along with the windmill farm, a solar power plant of 100 KW capacity is also being planned
Chennai: In a bid to reduce dependence on the supply of power from the state electricity board, the Chennai Port Trust (CPT) is now in the process of tapping wind as well as solar energy. Almost a year after expression of interest was first sought for a windmill farm to be set up within the port, the authorities are now preparing to invite tenders for the project.
“Tender documents for the windmill project of 6.5 MW capacity, are currently being processed for approval. After approval is given, we plan to invite tenders from interested parties sometime around December 15,” a CPT official told DC on Tuesday.
In tandem with the windmill farm, a solar power plant of 100 KW capacity, is also being planned, the official added. Stating that there has been an encouraging response from private companies for both projects, he said that the projects may go on stream during the 2015-2016 financial year period.
“Taking cue from the Centre’s directive to rely on renewable energy, we have decided to proceed with the two projects,” the official said. Every month, Chennai Port Trust procures at least 15 lakh units from Tangedco to meet its energy needs.
