Backyards sold as plots, welcome to Andhra Pradesh capital

Most of these lands, interestingly, do not have road connectivity

VIJAYAWADA: The ‘capital impact’, which already turned lands dearer, has now started invading the residential plots too.

Though there are doubts whether the backyards and cattle-sheds attached to the houses can at all be called “residential plots”, these spaces are enjoying a sudden hike in demand in Tulluru mandal.

Some site-owners are even winding up the cattle breeding and are removing the backyard gardens to convert them into plots so that they can make some quick-money in this market.

While in neighbouring villages, the price of a square yard is somewhere between Rs 9,000 to Rs 15,000, in Tulluru the price has skyrocketed to Rs 24,000.

A.Venkateswara Rao, a farmer of Uddhandarayunipalem, who is selling plots, that have been developed in his backyard, at Rs 10,000 and Rs 14,000 per sq. yard, predicts even higher prices, once the capital construction begins.

Without any watchdog to check the malpractices going on, some farmers are even dividing their lands and selling the parts separately at high prices. Most of these lands, interestingly, do not have road connectivity.
