Modi's cabinet expansion: New team to be fast, transparent

Not satisfied with the performance of some colleagues, the PM rejigged his Cabinet

New Delhi: The mantra of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expanded council of ministers will ensure “transparency” in crucial deals, particularly those concerning defence, safety and customer service in the railways and stress on performance.

Not satisfied with the performance of some of his senior Cabinet colleagues, the Prime Minister had rejigged his Cabinet on Sunday, besides enlarging his council of ministers.

Taking over as India’s new defence minister, Manohar Parrikar made it clear defence deals will be “transparent and fast”. Suresh Prabhu, taking charge of the railways, said railway safety and customer service would be his key priorities.

He felt that the potential of the Indian Railways had not been properly exploited. Mr Parrikar is being nominated for a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh, Mr Prabhu will be fielded for the Upper House from Haryana.

In another interesting move, the Prime Minister made high-profile colleague Arun Jaitley take charge of the information and broadcasting portfolio, replacing Prakash Javade-kar, who was MoS (independent charge).

Taking charge of his new portfolio, Mr Jaitley said the media domain had expanded immensely and the ministry had to look at the changed information process scenario.
