Absent labourers: Tendersure slows

Road users hit, BBMP carries out work at its own pace

BENGALURU: Development of roads under Tendersure project at a whopping cost of Rs. 200 crore is progressing at snail's pace putting commuters under high inconvenience, especially during peak hours.

Urban experts and members of Resident Welfare Association (RWA) feel that the work is not progressing at Tendersure standard pace. Considering the density of vehicles on these roads, work should be taken up round the clock, but workers are missing in action.

D. S. Rajshekar, executive president of Federation of Bengaluru North East Resident Welfare Association (FBNE) said that the progress of the work cannot be compared to routine BBMP projects which are dead slow.

The executing agency, BBMP must have a realistic deadline to lessen the inconvenience to public and adhere to the deadline.

“Although thousands of commuters and pedestrians use Cunningham and St. Mark’s Road no public consultation was held. Public works cannot be taken up unilaterally and people’s opinion must be respected,” he said.

But, as things are progressing it appears that no importance is given for executing the work rapidly.

Meenakshi Bharat, member of Citizens’ Action Forum said although the concept of giving priority of pedestrian is good, the work is going on at snail’s pace.

Tendersure work cannot be treated as any BBMP work and the work should be carried out 24 hours. This way, the inconvenience caused to public can be reduced.

Vivek Menon, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Invicus Engineers and prominent advisor, CiSTUP, IISc said that the agency must deploy as much resources as possible to get the work executed on major arterial road.

One more flaw by the BBMP is that taking up all seven arterial roads simultaneously. Arterial roads should be taken one after the other, especially at the heart of the city.

Since all seven major roads have been taken up at one go, contractors must have been lured with incentives and disincentives.

“If the contractor had completed the work ahead of deadline, he could be given incentive of extra payment and if he delays a penalty should have been incorporated in the contract. This helps complete the project on time,” Mr. Menon added.
