Only 3,000 at counselling for 45,000 B.Tech seats

70 per cent of the seats still remain vacant

Hyderabad: More than 45,000 seats in 174 engineering colleges, which were earlier barred by JNTU, were made available in the special phase counselling, after a Supreme Court directive, but only about 32 per cent of the seats could be fiilled. Only about 3,000 students participated in the counselling for 45,000 seats and all of them got seats of their choice.

JNTU Hyderabad had denied affiliation to about 174 engineering colleges before Eamcet counselling. However, the consortium of colleges later approached the apex court. The Supreme Court directed the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) to conduct counselling for the 174 colleges.

According to officials, 45,392 seats were available for admissions in the engineering colleges for which counselling was being done.

The officials said that on the first day of counselling, when students with ranks from one to one lakh were called, only about 500 turned up, with the remaining turning up on subsequent days..

About 3,263 students enrolled for counselling, but only 3,149 students turned up and gave their choices and all of them got seats of their choice. With this nearly 70 per cent of the seats still remain vacant.

Moreover, the colleges will not receive fees directly and will be deposited in an alternate account until they are given final affiliation, by JNTU Hyderabad, after inspections this month.
