Ram Jethmalani backs Pervez Musharraf on Jammu and Kashmir

Lawyer says he quietened PM over Art. 370

SRINAGAR: Former BJP MP and eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani, who is in Srinagar to renew his contact with Kashmiri separatist leaders and other stakeholders, said on Saturday that the 4-point formula proposed by former Pakistan ruler Pervez Musharraf should serve as the basis for a permanent solution to the Kashmir issue.

He alleged that Mr. Musharraf’s efforts to seek an amicable solution to the vexed issue of Kashmir were “frustrated” by India.

He also added that Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was part of the Constitution’s basic structure which “nobody can touch.”

He also claimed that the BJP was now “quiet” on it as he had explained its importance to PM Narendra Modi.

Mr Jethmalani after meeting Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and some other separatist leaders and members of civil society said that the then Pakistan ruler Mr Musharraf had come to India in April 2005 “with a firm and honest intention”.

He said, “His proposal is a fantastic solution to the Kashmir problem. It is a wonderful document, which should be the basis for a permanent solution of Kashmir. I’ve no difficulty in confessing that his efforts were frustrated by India and not Pakistan.”
