Burdwan blast kingpin was jailed in Bangladesh

Saijd is a senior JMB leader

Kolkata: The accused of the Burdwan blast, Sajid was caught by the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) of the Bidhannagar police commissionerate, the three year old police wing of the Mamata Banerjee government which was initially reluctant to hand over the probe to the NIA.

The specific input about Sajid’s movements was given by a Central intelligence agency to the ATS, sources revealed.

Bidhannagar police commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Saturday evening that Sajid’s original identity was Sheikh Rahmatullah, 40, a Bangladeshi national from Narayan-gunge who used another name, Siddique, to evade arrest.

Mr Kumar added, “Saijd is a senior JMB leader. According to some unconfirmed reports, he is a member of the majlis-e-shura, the central committee of the terror outfit. He is the main accused in the Burdwan blasts case.”

Sources suggested that Sajid was apprehended a couple of days ago after action on intelligence inputs and was extensively examined by the security agencies at an undisclosed location.

An ATS official said on condition of anonymity that Sajid had earlier spent several years in a Bangladeshi jail.

At night the NIA took Sajid to its Kolkata branch office at Sector V, Salt Lake, and was interrogating him about his stay near Mukhimnagar madrasa in Lalgola, Murshi-dabad, and about the JMB network in West Bengal.

The probe agency will produce him in the city sessions court and seek remand for further interrogation.
