Mining probe: Madras HC closes contempt plea against Government

Petition sought to punish the authorities for not implementing the court order
Chennai: The Madras high court has closed a contempt application against the state government after complying with its direction to appoint U. Sagayam IAS to probe into illegal mining,
The first bench, comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, closed the petition, which sought to punish the authorities for not implementing the court order dated October 28 on the assignment given to Mr. Sagayam.
The commissioner of geology and mining on November 5 had passed an order in compliance with the court’s order, directing Sagayam to inspect the illegal mines. Hence, the bench said, the present application, seeking to punish the officials, had become infructuous, the bench said. The bench closed the contempt petition filed by ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy.
