Godavari on verge of drying up

Low water level has hit the growth of fish making the life of fishermen miserable
Chinnayanam (Nizamabad): River Godavari has almost dried up in Nizamabad district. The water-level is at its low and it has hit the growth of fish making the life of fishermen miserable. The water-level is so low that people can easily walk into the middle of the river. River Godavari enters into Telangana state at Kandakurthi village in Renjal mandal from Maharashtra. The river flows along Nizamabad and Adilabad up to the Sriramsagar project (SRSP). Shortage in rainfall and closure of Babli project gates in Maharashtra have affected the water flow in the river and storage at the SRSP.
According to official sources, the SRSP has a mere 1067.2 tmcft (23.94 tmc) of water in it on Wednesday against its full reservoir level of 1,091ft with 90.31 tmc of water storage. It may be recalled that the project had water at the full reservoir level on the corresponding day last year. In view of the low water-level, the project officials have restricted outflow to main canals.
Barkala Bhumanna, 74, of Chinna Yanam in Nandipet mandal said the waterflow in Godavari has decreased sharply in the last few days. Prior to the construction of Sriram-sagar project (SRSP was built in 1963) Godavari used to be in full flow all through the year.
“We used to travel on boats to reach neighbouring Adilabad district,” he said. Villagers of Kustapuram, near here, even got submerged in the backwaters of SRSP forcing the villagers to settle in other areas, he said. The Lord Rama’s temple in Kustapuram has been shifted to SRSP, which used to be called Pochampad dam, earlier. With Lord Rama’s temple being shifted to the dam, Pochampad was named Sriramsagar in 1977. A ‘Siva linga’ also used to be present in Kustapuram but it got submerged.
