Kochi Metro Rail Limited to prepare report on water transport for Kochi

KMRL has been entrusted with the implementation of water transport projects
Kochi: In the wake of German bank KFW’s offer of financial assistance to Kochi for the development of urban transport, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited authorities have initiated steps to prepare a comprehensive report on water transport. Though various agencies including NATPAC have conducted detailed studies on water transport, a comprehensive report on the existing situation of urban ferry services has to be submitted to the German bank.
“An inspection of existing ferry routes was conducted to assess the situation of jetties and vessels. To process the loan offer, a detailed report has to be submitted to the state government and the German authorities,” said sources at KMRL.
KMRL managing director Elias George and other officials undertook the boat journey to Varapuzha, Vypeen, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry as part of the inspection.
KMRL has been entrusted with the implementation of water transport projects using the funds offered by German bank KFW. The city will get Rs 624 cr for urban transport development with a focus on water transport. KFW has offered financial assistance for formation of a special purpose vehicle for road transport in the city, water transport development and formation of Unified Metroplotan Transport Authority (UMTA).
