Will Vasan revive Tamil Maanila Congress?

There are speculation that of Vasan reviving the Tamil Maanila Congress
Chennai: Congress observers say that the sulking Vasan may not have many options even though he has announced he would announce his ‘decision’ on Monday after consulting his followers. There has been some speculation that he would revive the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), which was launched by his father G.K. Moopanar after revolting against P.V. Narasimha Rao’s decision to align with Jayalalithaa in 1996.
Mr Vasan had merged the TMC with the Congress in 2002 and was rewarded with PCC president’s post and later a berth in the Manmohan Singh cabinet as shipping minister.
While Mr Vasan is busy ‘consulting’ his aides after the humiliating replacement of loyalist Gnanadesikan with EVKS, party insiders point out that it would be a Herculean task for him to revive the TMC and bid for political space in the Dravidian turf.
“In the present scenario, one must spend tonnes of money to stay in the reckoning in Tamil Nadu politics. Will Vasan do that? Unlikely,” says a former Congress minister.
The party veteran also argued that should Vasan decide to quit the Congress and revive the TMC, he would have to steal from the tiny teaspoon which is what the Congress in TN presently is as the latest Lok Sabha poll results showed the party only has 4.3 vote share in the state.
