High yield expected, Andhra Pradesh plans more rice counters

Farmers hopeful that the state will lift the entire stock this year
VIJAYAWADA: The civil supplies department plans to establish paddy purchase counters, in response to farmers’ associations’ demands. The associations expect a high yield this year and had been asking the government to set the purchase centres earlier than usual. According to estimates, Krishna delta will produce about 30 to 40 lakh tonnes of paddy this year.
The civil supplies department had been accused of failing to procure the total produce earlier. Keeping this in view, the district administration plans more counters and earlier than usual, this year.
Last year, the civil supplies department had opened 46 counters in Krishna district though the demand was for more. Moreover, the counters are never at a permanent location.
“We plan more counters this year, preferably at the same locations as last year. The extra counters would be set up keeping the demand at village-level in mind,” said district agriculture department administrative officer A. Ravi Krishna.
YSR Congress Rytu Wing state convener M.V.S. Nagi Reddy said that farmers hope that the state will lift the entire stock this year, since the Central government has announced it will procure only 25 per cent of the produce.
