Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh credits Sardar Patel for Indian Union

Patel single-handedly achieved the merger of 562 princely states with the India
Hyderabad: Union minister for home affairs Rajnath Singh on Friday said that without Sardar Vallabhai Patel, perhaps Hyderabad’s merger with India would not have been possible. He said India’s first home minister had single-handedly achieved the merger of 562 princely states with the Indian Union with minimum violence.
Addressing the IPS officer trainees during the Passing-Out Parade ceremony at Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, the home minister said that to honour of Sardar Patel’s immense contributions, the Union government had decided to observe his birthday as the National Unity Day.
Congratulating the IPS officer trainees, who finished their training, Mr Singh said that in the present day, a police officer’s duty is much more than crime prevention and detection.
“Organised crime and crimes committed under the cloak of ideologies have to be tackled. Left wing extremism is one such example. It is necessary to bring about qualitative changes in the morals, capabilities and working methods of the police in order to deal with such crime,” he said.
The minister added that cyber crime has also become a big challenge, and the Union ministry was taking necessary steps to strengthen cyber crime prevention strategy. “Cyber crime figures for 2013-14 show that it is increasing at the rate of 50 per cent per year, with Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh being among the most affected states,” he said.
