Visakhapatnam: An Indian Navy ship collided with a merchant vessel approximately 300 nautical miles off Vizag coast on Friday. The Indian Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry into the incident.
Early on Friday morning, INS Kora, collided with the merchant ship MV Madeleine Rickmers, a container carrier registered in Marshal Islands.
“The ships were operating in high seas at a distance of approximately 300 nautical miles southeast of Vizag. While the merchant ship did not suffer any damages, the corvette has sustained minor damages. However, there are no operational limitations and she is continuing with her mission. A Board of Inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the incident,” said a
representative of Eastern Naval Command (ENC).
INS Kora (P61) that hit a merchant vessel approximately 300 nautical miles off Vizag coast on Friday is the lead ship of her class of four corvettes. It was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers for the Indian Navy and has been in service since August 1998. Kora-class corvettes are 1350-ton guided-missile corvettes.
The merchant ship is owned by Rickmers group of Germany and carries a Marshal Islands flag. The ship had sailed from Chittagong two days ago.
