Allahabad High Court stays Surendra Koli hanging

The HC has sought a reply from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government on the issue

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court, on Friday, stayed the execution order of Nithari killing convict, Surendra Koli, till November 25 on the grounds that considerable delay had taken place in disposing off his mercy petition.

The HC has sought a reply from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government on the issue. The court has asked the governments to produce all documents related to Koli’s mercy petition.

A plea seeking a stay on execution of Surendra Koli was filed in the HC by People’s Union for Democratic Rights stating that Koli’s mercy petition had been delayed by almost three years and he had already spent eight years in jail. It prayed that the death sentence should be converted into life imprisonment.
