Kerala: Ismail Kutty back home after 50 years

Ismail Kutty, of Kunampadickal, left home in 1964

KOTTAYAM: K S Ismail Kutty, 74, is lucky that his kin don’t treat him as a prodigal, coming back home after half a century hiatus.

Ismail Kutty, of Kunampadickal, left home in 1964, telling his father he would return a successful bizman.

But that was not to be. He tried his hand at several things but couldn’t mobilize sufficient funds to pay back Rs 5,000 he had borrowed.

Too embarrassed to face the home crowd, he went round and round, including Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

At home, Kutty was greeted by elder brother Hassan Kunju last Thursday.

“I used to be very depressed, not able to achieve anything. I avoided contacting my family and didn’t even reply to parents’ letters”, said Mr Kutty.

In between, Mr Kutty married Kamala, who converted to Islam and took the name, Fatima. She died two months back when he decided to return and be with his brother for the rest of his life.

“We don’t want anything, but his presence. We will not let him go anywhere”, said Mr Hassan Kunju.
Changanasserry town he left behind had been different. “So many buses and buildings, I even can’t recognize the place where I lived till I was 24”, he said.
