Vijay Amritraj is nervous, excited

The former tennis star speaks about the league
Bengaluru: With less than three weeks to go for the Champions Tennis League, the man behind it all, Vijay Amritraj, is nervous and excited at the same time. The city-based League which features stars like Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, David Ferrer among others will kick-start on November 17. In a freewheeling interview, the 60-year-old former star spoke at length about the League.
Excerpts:
The thoughts, with three weeks to go for the League: I’m excited and nervous at the same time.
On the conceptualisation of the League: The intentions behind wanting a League like this were both to do with the fact that we couldn’t get enough tournaments. The ATP calendar is full, the WTA calendar is almost full. It is difficult to get a good event here. How are you going to get a chance here to see top guys and girls? The Chennai Open has been successful but it is only for Chennai fans.
On getting Martina Hingis on board: We didn’t have to ask Martina Hingis a second time. She didn’t need any convincing and she was keen to play. Her agent reached out to one of my friends.
The biggest challenge in putting the League together: A lot of hiccups, speed bumps, but nothing insurmountable. To a great extent it was the timing as we had the calendar challenge of finding a window.
