School wall collapses, tree uprooted in Kovai

Heavy rains in city caused wall to collapse
Coimbatore: With rains pounding in Coimbatore city over the last week, the compound walls of a government school and the Electricity board office in the city collapsed on Tuesday morning.
When the students and teachers of the SRP Ammani Ammal School at RS Puram came to the school on Tuesday morning, they were shocked to find that a portion of the compound wall had crashed.
The rubble of the compound wall, which was close to a parking shed, was lying on the water-logged road. However, no student was injured as the wall had collaped in the small hours of Tuesday.
The compound wall of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) office on Sungam Bye pass road collapsed on Tuesday morning. Tangedco officials said that due to heavy rainfall, a portion of the compound wall weakened and crashed on the roadside. Around 2.15 pm, the branches of the mayflower tree in the new Superintendent of Police office at Ram Nagar fell on the roadside, injuring an elderly woman passing by. A roadside eatery outside the SP’s offce was also damaged.
Local residents rushed the woman to a private hospital for treatment while the Corporation workers chopped the branches of the tree and removed them. A tree was also uprooted on the Ramalingam West Street in RS Puram and fell on the road, which was axed and removed by the city police on Tuesday morning.
