AIADMK functionary killed on road

Police are following several leads, His wife is also into lending money
Chennai: A 43-year-old man, an AIADMK functionary, was murdered by a four-member gang near Velachery TNHB Colony on Tuesday. The police suspect a family dispute to be the primary motive behind the murder.
Around 6.30 am, Ezhumalai, a resident of 20th cross street, Ambedkar Nagar, in Adambakkam, was out on his routine morning walk when the gang intercepted him and rained blows on him, the police said. The man suffered cuts on his head, neck and chest and died on way to a private hospital.
The Velachery police later moved the body to government Royapettah hospital for post-mortem. Investigating officials are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
Ezhumalai was into real estate business and also sold construction material from a shop at 4th street in the same area. “We are probing whether it is also a case of a business deal gone sour,” the police said.
However, investigations revealed that the deceased’s wife, Kavitha, was also a small time loan shark. According to a senior official, “Kavitha lends money to locals mortgaging their settlements and would later usurp the property if the debtors failed to pay up. Ezhumalai was a co-conspirator in this.”
Speaking to DC, a senior police officer said Ezhumalai had frequent squabbles with his relatives. After the murder; Ezhumalai’s relative, Joseph, has absconded raising strong suspicions about his involvement. The police said Ezhumalai was also an accused in a double-murder case that took place in 2002. The Velachery police are investigating.
