Casting chefs for TV!

Hundreds from the city and beyond bring out their culinary best for the auditions of Masterchef India
Hyderabad: A quiet hall with people patiently filling out forms, plenty of hustle and bustle with someone asking for their registration number, the aroma of butter chicken in the air and a platter of Khubaani Ka Meetha laid out with finesse. The occasion, auditions for the reality show Masterchef.
With about 250 applicants not just from Hyderabad but the nearby states as well, the theatre group Sutradhar had a busy day as they conducted the auditions for the show, third year in a row. Talking about the procedure, Vinay Varma says, “Through word of mouth and social media, we spread the news about the auditions happening in the city and soon, we had numerous entries. Casting for a reality show is different because along with talent there needs to be a story to the candidate too.”
Soon, a lady walks up to Vinay and asks whether her turn could be hastened as she had a train to catch in the evening. Hearing her out, Vinay turns to say, “Even though we are only responsible for the applications from Hyderabad, we got calls from various other centres asking if they could apply from here. We then redirected them to their respective centres.”
As names are called out and people get their delicacies together, you can clearly see the tension on their faces. Manish Purohit, a student at Badruka College of Commerce, says, “I had always wanted to be a chef but on my own terms. I will be presenting pizza to the judges.”
As people walk out of the audition rooms and pack their bags, there is a smile on their faces. Ruchika Awasthi, who is from Himachal Pradesh but has been residing in the city, says, “I made Himachali dishes. This feels like a step closer to my dream of being a chef.”
